AFC Lightning Challenge Tournament
March 12-13, 2005

Tournament summary: (updated March 14) 

We got back into action after a long rainy spell by playing in the AFC Lightning Challenge tournament. The weekend had plenty of highlights from all four teams. Our youngest girls made it to the semi-finals, where they lost to the eventual champions. Our oldest girls made it to the finals, but lost in a heart-breaker. Our other two teams gave it their all, but didn't make it into the knock-out rounds.

We thank all the girls for the effort, skill and enthusiasm, and we thank the parents for their time and support over a long but fun weekend of soccer. Good job girls!

We also thank the AFC Lightning Soccer Club for organizing this event, and the Griffin Soccer Club for providing the beautiful Cowan Road fields for our games. And we can't pass up the chance to give thanks to the weather gods for providing a dry weekend!

Tournament information: (updated March 5) 

• Competition format:  We'll field four teams in the U10 Girls divisions, which play 8-aside. Each team has three guaranteed games (two Saturday, one Sunday), with a chance to qualify for a championship game Sunday afternoon as a 4th game.

• Fields:  All of our teams will play at the Cowan Road Complex in Griffin (south of Fayetteville).  Griffin fields #5 and 6 are on higher ground than the others, so hopefully this week's rain won't affect our chances to complete the tournament.
   
  • Hotel / Motel?  One team has a 7:45 AM Saturday game, another team could possibly have a 7:45 AM Sunday game. Some families may choose to get hotel rooms so they won't have to wake before dawn to make a 90-minute drive for a 7:15 AM warm-up. Hotels in Griffin are 5 minutes from the fields. Hampton is about 10 minutes away, McDonough about 15 minutes away. The zip code for the Cowan Road soccer complex is 30224.

Notes:

• In case of bad weather, tournament games could be shortened or converted into penalty kick shootouts rather than being canceled altogether. (Griffin fields #5 and 6 are on higher ground than the others, so hopefully this week's rain won't affect our chances to complete the tournament.) If the weather is iffy, check the AFC field status hot-line: 770-460-7811.
   
• The girls should wear their red / black / black uniforms unless told otherwise, but should always have their gray shirts with them in case of color conflict. (There will be occasions when we will be playing teams who normally wear red, so we may need to change into gray.)
   
• Plan to be at the game fields 30 minutes before kickoff for warm-up.
   
• Referees are likely to be strict about earrings, necklaces and any hard hair accessories. Players should leave these items at home or be prepared to remove them, otherwise they may not be allowed to play.
   
• Hydration and nutrition notes: Proper hydration and nutrition can have a huge impact on your daughter's performance over the weekend:
   
  • Before games:  The girls should eat a low-fat breakfast a couple of hours before their first games. Milk is fine with cereal, but the girls should skip milk as a pre-game beverage. Water or a sports drink such as Gatorade and PowerAde are better pre-game beverage choices than milk or fruit juice.
     
  • Between games:  The girls should eat a meal within an hour after their first games. Carbohydrates and moderate amounts of protein are fine; avoid high-fat foods. If the post-game meal is not enough to carry your daughter over until her second game, she can eat a small snack (something light like low-fat crackers, an energy bar or a banana) about an hour before the second game. The best between-game fluids are water or sports drinks like Gatorade or PowerAde; avoid milk during this period.
     
  • After Saturday's 2nd game:  The girls should eat some type of carbohydrate snack as soon as possible after their second Saturday games. This is one time where candy is actually a good choice. They can eat a big meal after they get home. Milk is fine during this post-game period.
     
  • After the final Sunday game:  You have our permission to throw all the previous guidelines out the window!
