Cobb Classic Tournament
February 21-22, 2004

Tournament summary:  (updated February 22)

All three Quest Athena Academy teams had a strong showing in the Cobb Classic tournament. We congratulate the girls for how well they played (an entertaining combination of skill, intelligence and desire) and how well they represented the Quest Athena Academy program. Here's a recap:

• Quest Blue faced bigger, stronger opponents and gave them fits, but didn't come away with any wins.
   
• Quest White advanced to the semi-final round, then lost a 1-0 heart-breaker (giving everything they had until the final whistle) to get knocked out.

Quest Red went undefeated to win the U10 Gold championship.

Great job girls; the coaches are proud of you! Parents, if you have any team or action photos you'd like to share, send them to Ward for posting on the web site.

Notes:

• Weather: In case of bad weather, tournament games may be shortened or converted into penalty kick shootouts rather than being canceled altogether. If the weather is iffy, check the Academy hot-line or the Cobb FC field status hot-line: 404-818-9221.
   
• Uniforms: The girls should wear their red uniforms unless told otherwise, but should always have their gray shirts with them in case of color conflict. (There may be an occasion when we play a team who normally wears red, so we may need to change into gray.)
   
• Plan to be at the game fields 30 minutes before kickoff for warm-up.
   
• Referees are likely to be strict about earrings, necklaces and any hard hair accessories. Players should leave these items at home or be prepared to remove them, otherwise they may not be allowed to play.
   
• Nutrition notes: Good nutrition can have a huge impact on your daughter's performance over the weekend:
   
  • Before games:  The girls should eat a low-fat breakfast a couple of hours before their first games. Milk is fine with cereal, but the girls should skip milk as a pre-game beverage.
     
  • Between games:  If there's a several hour layoff between games, the girls should eat a meal within an hour after their first game. If there's only an hour or two between games, the girls should eat a small snack immediately after the first game. Carbohydrates and moderate amounts of protein are fine; avoid high-fat foods. If the post-game meal is not enough to carry your daughter over until her second game, she can eat a small snack (something light like low-fat crackers, an energy bar or a banana) about an hour before the second game. The best between-game fluids are water or sports drinks like Gatorade or PowerAde; avoid milk during this period.
     
  • After Saturday's 2nd game:  The girls should eat some type of carbohydrate snack as soon as possible after their second Saturday games. This is one time where candy is actually a good choice. They can eat a big meal after they get home. Milk is fine during this post-game period.
     
  • After the final Sunday game:  You have our permission to throw all the previous guidelines out the window!
