NASA Classic Tournament
August 29-30, 2009
Recap: (August 30) We congratulate the girls for the effort, enthusiasm and skill during the NASA Classic tournament! We thank the parents for their time and support, and for keeping informed and getting their daughters to the right places at the right times after some late schedule changes.
Thanks also to the tournament staff, who "weathered" some challenges from Mother Nature and still managed to get the vast majority of games played. Here's a review of each team's weekend:
NASA South Lloyd: Won big in game 1, lost a close one in game 2, was trailing a well-played game 3 when thunderstorms came through and eventually cancelled the game. Here are some photos of the girls during Sunday's rain delay:
NASA South Mitts: Had a roller coaster Saturday - won big in game 1, lost big in game 2. Was trailing in game 3 on Sunday when thunderstorms came through and eventually cancelled the game.
NASA South Rampone: High drama Saturday - won a close one, lost a close one. Lost to an excellent team in game 3 on Sunday to get knocked out.
Tournament information: (updated August 14)
Competition format: Teams play a 3-game guaranteed round-robin schedule. Group winners advance to a championship game Sunday afternoon.

NASA Academy U10 Girls South - Team Assignments: (updated August 14)
Team rosters and schedules will stay fixed throughout the tournament.
Team rosters are larger than usual. Main reasons: 1. Multiple games per day in the heat is more physically challenging for the players, which means we need more subs. 2. Tournament rules require rosters to stay fixed, so we can't borrow a player from another team in case of illness, injury, traffic delay, etc.
You can click each team's name to view its schedule.
Girls whose names have a yellow background are warm-up captains. They are responsible for gathering their teammates and starting pre-game warm-up. Link: warm-up ideas

Notes:
Arrival time: Girls should report to the game field 30 minutes before kickoff for warm-up. Parking will likely be a challenge, so you may need to drop your daughter off near her field so she can start warm-up while you find a parking spot.
Bad weather: In case of bad weather, tournament games could be shortened or converted into penalty kick shootouts rather than being canceled altogether. If the weather is iffy, check our Academy hot-line or the tournament web site.
Tips for parents: We ask that you be your daughter's biggest fans, and all the other girls' 2nd biggest fans. Please help us keep the environment positive and fun for the players. Link: Game day guidelines for parents.
Uniforms: We may have some color conflicts this weekend. Girls should wear their blue shirts, blue shorts and white socks. They should also have their white shirts, white shorts, and blue socks in their backpack in case we have to change due to a color conflict.
Footwear: Girls should wear their normal soccer shoes and also bring sandals, flip flops or crocs. After games, the girls should remove their socks, shinguards and soccer shoes, and switch to sandals, flip flops or crocs. This will help keep them cooler and also allow time for the other items to dry out.
Turf shoes / sneakers? Some teams play one game on the turf field. Most players are fine wearing regular soccer cleats on the turf field, but some players prefer turf shoes or sneakers. Check your daughter's schedule, and if she has a game on the turf field, consider bringing an alternate pair of shoes just in case.
No jewelry: Referees are likely to be strict about earrings, necklaces and any hard hair accessories. Players should leave these items at home or be prepared to remove them, otherwise they may not be allowed to play.
Proper hydration: It's likely to be hot out there! The best protection against the heat is proper hydration. Link: hydration guidelines. This includes drinking plenty of "good" fluids before, during and after games. Please make sure your daughter is staying properly hydrated, and also make sure she brings a large insulated water jug (minimum half- gallon) to each game. Bottled water may be convenient, but it's not practical for hot weather. The water won't stay cold, so girls won't want to drink it.
Nutrition notes: Good nutrition can have a huge impact on your daughter's performance over the weekend:
Before games: The girls should eat a high-carb, low-fat breakfast a couple of hours before their first games. A small amount of milk is fine with cereal, but the girls should skip milk as a pre-game beverage.
Between games: Some teams don't have long breaks between games. Check your daughter's schedule and make plans based on the amount of down-time between games:
For teams with long breaks between games, the girls should eat a light meal within an hour after their first games. Carbohydrates and moderate amounts of protein are fine; avoid high-fat foods. If the post-game meal is not enough to carry your daughter over until her second game, she can eat a small snack (something light like low-fat crackers, an energy bar or a banana) about an hour before the second game. The best between-game fluids are water or sports drinks like Gatorade or PowerAde; avoid milk during this period.
For teams with short breaks between games, the girls should eat a snack (one or two items such as low-fat crackers, an energy bar or a banana) soon after their first games. The best between-game fluids are water or sports drinks like Gatorade or PowerAde; avoid milk during this period.
After each day's 2nd game: The girls should eat some type of carbohydrate snack as soon as possible after their second Saturday games. This is one time where candy is actually a decent choice. They can eat a big meal after they get home. Milk is fine during this post-game period.
After the final game: You have our permission to throw the previous guidelines out the window!
