NASA Adidas Friendship Cup Tournament
May 22-23, 2010
Tournament recap: (updated May 23) We congratulate all the girls for their effort, skill and enthusiasm during the Adidas Friendship Cup tournament! We also thank the NASA parents for their support and enthusiasm through a busy and hot weekend. The key word for the tournament -- confidence. The girls were confident in their own skills and those of their teammates, and they played creative and entertaining soccer throughout the weekend. Here's a recap for each of our seven teams:
NASA Chalupny: Lost a close one in their first game, won their second game. Needed a win in their third game to advance to the championship, and came close with a come-from-behind tie in an entertaining and competitive NASA vs. NASA contest.
NASA Lloyd: Won all three round robin games to advance to the championship match, where they beat the East Cobb YMCA Striker Red team in an exciting match to claim the U10 Blue division championship. (We thank Monique Lung for the following photos.)
NASA Mitts: Posted wins against two East Cobb YMCA Strikers teams on Saturday. Got knocked out with a close loss to a NW YMCA Striker team on Sunday.
NASA O'Reilly: Tied their first game, won their second game, then lost their third game and ended up tied for 1st in their bracket in the U10 White division. Missed out on going to the final by the 3rd tie-breaker.
NASA Rampone: Lost by a goal to their Yamaguchi sisters in their first game, tied Inter Atlanta in their second game, beat a NW YMCA team in game 3. Missed out on going to the final by a converted penalty kick in another game.
NASA Tarpley: Won all three round robin games to advance to the championship match, where they won a close match against Inter-Atlanta to claim the U9 Blue division championship.
NASA Yamaguchi: Won both Saturday games, including an amazing performance in game 2 in the heat on a 8-aside field with only one sub. Lost a "no consequence" Sunday morning game (team had already qualified for the championship game), then lost a nail-biter in overtime to an Inter Atlanta team in the U9 White division championship.
Tournament information: (updated May 17)
Competition format: Teams play a 3-game guaranteed round-robin schedule. Group winners advance to a championship game Sunday afternoon.

NASA Academy U10 Girls - Team Assignments: (updated May 21)
Team rosters and schedules will stay fixed throughout the tournament. (Tournament rules don't allow "on the fly" roster or schedule adjustments like we occasionally make in typical Academy games.)
Rosters include players from both NASA parks.
Teams have different warm-up captains for each game. They are indicated with the yellow background and the game number (C1=captain for game 1, etc.).
You can click each team's name to view its schedule.

Notes:
Arrival time: Girls should report to the game field 30 minutes before kickoff for warm-up. Parking will likely be a challenge, so you may need to drop your daughter off near her field so she can start warm-up while you find a parking spot.
Bad weather: In case of bad weather, tournament games could be shortened or converted into penalty kick shootouts rather than being canceled altogether. If the weather is iffy, check our Academy hot-line (1-866-206-9066, ext. 8870#) or the tournament web site.
Tips for parents: We ask that you be your daughter's biggest fan, and all the other girls' 2nd biggest fan. Please help us keep the environment positive and fun for the players. Link: Game day guidelines for parents.
Uniforms: We'll have some color conflicts this weekend. Girls should wear their blue shirts, blue shorts and white socks. They should also have their white shirts, white shorts, and blue socks in their backpack in case we have to change due to a color conflict.
Exception: We have a couple of NASA vs. NASA games. The home NASA team (look for the "H" indicator on the schedule) should wear blue / blue / white, the away NASA team (look for the "a") should wear white / white / blue.
Footwear: Girls should wear their normal soccer shoes and also bring sandals, flip flops or crocs. After games, the girls should remove their socks, shin-guards and soccer shoes, and switch to sandals, flip flops or crocs. This will help keep them cooler and also allow time for the other items to dry out.
No jewelry: Players should leave these items at home or be prepared to remove them, otherwise they may not be allowed to play.
Proper hydration: The forecast calls for temperatures around 80 degrees. The best protection against the heat is proper hydration. Link: hydration guidelines. This includes drinking plenty of "good" fluids before, during and after games. Please make sure your daughter is staying properly hydrated, and also make sure she brings a large insulated water jug (minimum half- gallon) to each game. Bottled water may be convenient, but it's not practical for hot weather. The water won't stay cold, so girls won't want to drink it.
Nutrition notes: Good nutrition can have a huge impact on your daughter's performance over the weekend:
Before games: The girls should eat a high-carb, low-fat breakfast a couple of hours before their first games. A small amount of milk is fine with cereal, but the girls should skip milk as a pre-game beverage.
Between games: Some teams don't have long breaks between games. Check your daughter's schedule and make plans based on the amount of down-time between games:
For teams with long breaks between games, the girls should eat a light meal within an hour after their first games. Carbohydrates and moderate amounts of protein are fine; avoid high-fat foods. If the post-game meal is not enough to carry your daughter over until her second game, she can eat a small snack (something light like low-fat crackers, an energy bar or a banana) about an hour before the second game. The best between-game fluids are water or sports drinks like Gatorade or PowerAde; avoid milk during this period.
For teams with short breaks between games, the girls should eat a snack (one or two items such as low-fat crackers, an energy bar or a banana) soon after their first games. The best between-game fluids are water or sports drinks like Gatorade or PowerAde; avoid milk during this period.
After each day's 2nd game: The girls should eat some type of carbohydrate snack as soon as possible after their second Saturday games. This is one time where candy is actually a decent choice. They can eat a big meal after they get home. Milk is fine during this post-game period.
After the final game: You have our permission to throw the previous guidelines out the window!
